We're already a month into 2016 and with a new year comes a new crop of movies to get excited about! So here are the ten movies I'm anticipating most in 2016.
10. Finding Dory
What's it about?: The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the true meaning of family along the way. From IMDb
Why I'm excited: Finding Dory is the sequel to possibly my favorite Pixar film, Finding Nemo. Pixar has had a great track record, but I haven't considered its films the past few years to be anything special. Cars 2 was horrible, I didn't even bother seeing Brave, and Monsters University was simply average. But I have renewed faith in the animation studio because Inside Out was absolutely excellent! Plus the original writer & director, Andrew Stanton is returning so this film has win-win all over it.

9. Assassin's Creed
What's it about?: When Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society. From IMDb
Why I'm excited: It's one of the rare video games that I actually spent the time to collect all 1,000 achievement points in, so suffice it to say I'm a big fan of Assassin's Creed. Plus, I'm all in on anything that Michael Fassbender does. There's no trailer yet, but if the movie is anything like the games, then I'll be looking forward to yelling "parkour" anytime something cool happens. :)

8. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
What's it about?: Rebels set out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. From IMDb
Why I'm excited: While the film doesn't have the best things going for it; i.e. it'll never live up to The Force Awakens, it doesn't include any characters we know, and the director is the guy who directed the Godzilla reboot, it's still Star Wars! Right now, I'm most interested in who Donnie Yen is playing in Rogue One as there's zero information on this movie.
When it opens: December 16th
7. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
What's it about?: The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York's secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school. From IMDb
Why I'm excited: There seems to be this trend of making movies and TV shows about a popular franchise, without the popular figure of that franchise. On TV, Gotham and Supergirl try to forge their own paths without Batman & Superman. The aforementioned Rogue One is a Star Wars story without any of the main characters. And now, we're getting a Harry Potter movie without the boy wizard. Eddie Redmayne is perfectly likable, and the trailer seems appropriately magical. Plus David Yates who directed the last four Harry Potter movies is returning to direct Fantastic Beasts.
When it opens: November 18th
6. Doctor Strange
What's it about?: After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil. From IMDb
Why I'm excited: I saw 2015 as kind of a down year for Marvel. Age of Ultron was an entertaining mess that was ultimately disappointing, and Ant-Man just didn't have the highs of Captain America 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy the year before. Now Benedict Cumberbatch, who is absolutely amazing in Sherlock if you haven't seen it, plays the sorcerer supreme and promo shots from Entertainment Weekly look awesome! And it feels like Cumberbatch nails the "brilliant but arrogant" persona. While I can't say I've ever read a Doctor Strange comic, I'm legitimately excited to see how magic gets introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When it opens: November 4th
5. X-Men: Apocalypse
What's it about?: With the emergence of the world's first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan. From IMDb
Why I'm excited: I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Days of Future Past, even though I wasn't a fan of any of the trailers which made it look like a dark and bleak film, which is exactly what this trailer looks like. So I'm optimistic that X-Men set in the 80's isn't going to be all "end of the world" stuff and is going to be entertaining. Just forget that in early photos, Apocalypse looked like Ivan Ooze from the Power Rangers.
When it opens: May 27th
4. Star Trek Beyond
What's it about?: The USS Enterprise crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), have been attacked by a powerful unstoppable wave of unknown aliens, who destroy the Enterprise, leaving them stranded on a new planet where they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy, while finding a way to get off the planet. Why I'm excited: I loved the Star Trek reboot back in 2009. But Into Darkness, as a Star Trek fan made me mad. Now Justin Lin, best known for 4 of the past 5 Fast & Furious movies takes over the franchise, and it definitely shows in this trailer. This is here mainly because I've been a fan of Star Trek since I was a kid and I'm hoping that Beyond forges a new path instead of retreading old story-lines.

3. Deadpool
What's it about?: In an effort to cure his cancer, former special forces operative Wade Wilson was subjected to an experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, disfigured skin, an unstable mind, and a "dark, twisted" sense of humor. Why I'm excited: Deadpool was introduced right around the time I stopped reading comics so I've actually only read a few early issues but have no recollection of them. They're probably in my parent's basement somewhere. But I enjoy the violent and comedic nature of the character so that's what has me so interested in this movie. Ryan Reynolds seems perfectly cast as the the merc with the mouth, so maybe second time's the charm after the abomination that was the first solo Wolverine movie? The trailers all have this warped sense of humor that I really like and I'm also curious to see a no-holds barred comic book movie that's not Kick-Ass.
When it opens: February 12th

Why I'm excited: Despite my lukewarm feelings for Man of Steel, I'm legitimately looking forward to Batman v Superman. I think Henry Cavill makes a good Superman, and Ben Affleck looks to be capable as Bruce Wayne, even though armored Batman always reminds me of LEGO Batman. I'm also hoping the trailer didn't give away all the surprises because Gal Gadot's entrance as Wonder Woman and Doomsday showing up gave me dropjaw. The only wild card I'm concerned about is Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. Although when I do think back to Gene Hackman's Luthor, he was kind of a ham as well so we'll see how this pans out. Still extremely excited for this one.

1. Captain America: Civil War
What's it about?: After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, another international incident involving Steve Rogers and the Avengers results in collateral damage, prompting politicians to form a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to call in the Avengers, which results in the fracturing of the team into two opposing factions–one led by Rogers who wishes to operate without regulation, and one led by Tony Stark who supports government oversight–while they attempt to protect the world from a new enemy. Why I'm excited: The film basically looks like Avengers 2.5 and that can be a good or bad thing. Age of Ultron suffered from an over abundance of characters and it looks like Civil War is doubling down on that. Although we keep getting reminded that this is a Captain America story, that may be what saves the film. I used to think Chris Evans was the perfectly cast Human Torch. Now he's made Steve Rogers his own. I'm all in just based on the last fight in the trailer between Cap, Bucky, and Iron Man. I'm super excited to see this film!
