SNL 40th Anniversary Special Best Moments

Holy Crap! Saturday Night Live is as old as I am?!? Just how funny SNL is (or was) is always debatable. Everyone always claims their era was the best and the show currently sucks. Personally, my favorite era had Hans and Franz, the Church Lady, and Wayne's World. I'm probably dating myself here, but can you tell I'm a Dana Carvey fan? But every era has had its highs and lows. And those highs (and a few lows) were certainly on showcase last night at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center. So here's a list of some of my favorite moments from last night.

The History of SNL

Continuing their "History of Rap" series, Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake started the show weaving various famous SNL skits, characters, and catchphrases into a little ditty that went something like this.

Celebrity Jeopardy

The skit could have been a couple of minutes shorter, but it was nice to see Will Ferrell don Alex Trebek's mustache again along with Darrell Hammond's incredibly offensive version of Sean Connery. Add to that the return of Norm Macdonald as "Turd Ferguson" and you get a giant sized Celebrity Jeopardy.

Weekend Update

Weekend Update is generally the skit I look forward to most each show, mainly because I know it's in every show. In a historic move, three female anchors took to the desk last night, and Jane Curtin, SNL's first female anchor, probably delivered the joke of the night.

That's When You Break

Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, both known for their goofy song contributions to SNL added one more. A song about when actors "break" or laugh during a skit. And apparently Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz broke a lot. Easily the best musical moment of the night.

In Memoriam

Just when you thought the In Memoriam segment was getting a little too heavy, the very much alive Jon Lovitz makes an appearance. Nice callback to earlier in the show.

Wayne's World

Did I mention I love Wayne's World? A list of the Top Ten things about SNL, and Kanye West jokes? Count me in, and my favorite skit from the special.

And just to be fair, here are a few things that weren't so good about last night.

Eddie Murphy

All this hubbub about Eddie Murphy finally returning to SNL and Chris Rock's intro ended up being longer and funnier than Murphy's short time on stage. It was disappointing to not even see him introduce some of his funniest skits like Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson, and James Brown.

Almost Every Musical Number

Paul McCartney sounded like he was going through puberty again, Miley Cyrus did a Paul Simon song, and Kanye West sang lying down. SNL might want to stick to comedy. Thank God Paul Simon wrapped up the night on a high note.

What were some of your favorite moments from last night? Or did you not realize the special was even on and watched The Walking Dead instead?
