Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life
This past Sunday, HBO aired a Game of Thrones special titled "A Day In The Life" detailing much of the behind the scenes work that goes on in just one day of production on the Game of Thrones sets. If you're a Game of Thrones fan and are interested in some of the work that goes on behind the camera, AND you're looking for a little glimpse of season 5, this is a great look at that.
And here are five things to take away most from this special.
1. The Staggering Statistics for the Show
Season 5 specifically is being filmed in three countries; Croatia, Northern Ireland, and Spain, by two units across 151 sets, for 240 days, using 166 cast members, over 1,000 crew members, and over 5,000 extras to be broadcast to 193 countries worldwide. The amount of work that goes into the production of 10 hours of TV per year is just astonishing.
2. Behind the Scenes with Actors and Extras
There are some quick shots of Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey goofing off a bit, as well as hundreds of extras on set. Game of Thrones received over 84,000 applications to be extras.
3. Spain Gets Turned Into Dorne
Alcazar Palace in Sevilla becomes the Water Gardens of Dorne.
4. A Quarry Becomes Hardhome
Hardhome is a fishing village north of the Wall that serves as a battleground between the Crows and the Wildlings. The location was used for Castle Black in season 1 and for the Battle of Blackwater in season 2. It's apparently the "go to" location when they need water.
5. A Bullfighting Ring Becomes a Gladiator Arena
It's incredible to believe the production crew spent about 2 weeks transforming a bullring into a gladiator arena which is only going to be used in one scene.
Game of Thrones premieres April 12th.
