My Five Least Anticipated Films of 2015
I don't normally talk about stuff I'm not interested in here on nerdy views, but since I already told you about the films I'm anticipating this year, it seemed only fair to devote some time to the ones I'm not so psyched about. I could have just put together a list of romantic comedies, but these are high profile films I feel like I should be interested in. But for one reason or another, I'm just not. And who knows, maybe you're excited about one of these films, and you can try to convince me otherwise.
5. Inside Out
What's it about?: Inside Out takes place in the mind of a young girl, Riley Anderson, where five emotions try to lead her through life.
Why I should be excited but I'm not: Pixar is generally one of my favorite film studios. They've made some truly awesome movies including the Toy Story trilogy, The Incredibles, WALL-E and Up. But is the bloom finally off the rose? Pixar's last few movies have been some of the least critically receptive and I just haven't been interested in any of them since Toy Story 3. Add to that a plot that doesn't interest me and simply reminds me of a failed Fox sitcom called Herman's Head, and I just feel pretty "eh" about Inside Out.
When it opens: June 19th
4. Vacation
What's it about?: This sequel/reboot, follows a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) taking his wife and kids on a cross-country road trip to Wally World before it closes down.
Why I should be excited but I'm not: The Vacation series is hilarious. The original film is a perfect snapshot of a family road trip gone wrong. My friends and I still make references to the "parking by the exit" scene, plus how can you not love the "Holiday Road" theme song by Lindsey Buckingham? European Vacation took that wackiness overseas, and Christmas Vacation brought it back home becoming a modern Christmas classic. Even Vegas Vacation has its funny moments specifically the part with the dam tour. So another movie in the series should get me excited, no? Well, with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo reprising their roles in what will probably be cameos, it's nice to see the continuity. Hear that GHOSTBUSTERS 3?!? But following Ed Helms around in what sounds like a complete remake of the first movie is something I'm not interested in. If I wanted to see a funny road trip movie, I'd just watch the original. And since there's no trailer yet, here it is for Vacation.
Update: Here's a photo of the new cast along with regular Griswolds, Chevy Chase & Beverly D'Angelo.
When it opens: October 9th
3. Jupiter Ascending
What's it about?: Jupiter Ascending is a space opera about a young woman named Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) who unbeknownst to her, is the heir to Earth, and Caine Wise (Channing Tatum) is an interplanetary warrior trying to protect her.
Why I should be excited but I'm not: The Wachowskis are back doing original sci-fi for the first time since the Matrix trilogy, in a film that sounds extremely ambitious, but ultimately leaves me more confused than anything. The plot synopsis alone had me spinning my head, and the blurb that I put above was what I was able to simplify it to. While I think both Kunis and Tatum are good actors, I think they're better suited for comedies. And have you seen what Tatum looks like with his prosthetics?!? It just looks laughable.
When it opens: February 6th
2. Terminator: Genisys
What's it about?: Terminator: Genisys reboots the franchise casting new actors for each role, yet keeping Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular Terminator.
Why I should be excited but I'm not: The first Terminator put director James Cameron on the map, and Judgment Day remains one of my favorite sci-fi films. But Rise of the Machines and Salvation left me a little cold, and diminished my interest in the franchise. The Sarah Connor Chronicles was okay, but just further confused the timeline. It's no wonder they want to go back and restart everything all over again. But much like the Vacation franchise that I mentioned before, if I want to see a good Terminator film, I already have two of them to watch. Plus, look at how they spelled Genisys! That's just a douche move...
When it opens: July 1st
1. The Fantastic Four
What's it about?: Four people teleport to an alternate universe where they gain special abilities and must learn to work together to face a familiar enemy.
Why I should be excited but I'm not: Actually, I don't see any reason I should be excited. Has any comic book movie had as much muck thrown at it than this reboot of Fantastic Four? Okay, maybe Green Lantern... I haven't heard any good press about this movie, but Fox is 100% behind it and has already planned a sequel. The plot reportedly isn't based on any FF4 comics, and the foursome will not even be referred to as the Fantastic Four. So honestly, why bother even calling the movie that?!? It's a shameless money grab trying to associate it with the franchise, and it's a complete insult to the source material. Hear that new Karate Kid?!? This may make the original, unreleased FF4 movie look like Shakespeare. Okay, that may be going too far because that first one was really bad. But still, try to give me one reason to see this film.
When it opens: August 7th
Update: Here's the trailer for Fantastic Four. It doesn't do anything to knock it off or even down this list. Sorry F4.
So what do you think? Are any of you actually excited for these films? Or am I right on the money? And what are some other high profile films you have no interest in? Let me know!
