Ten Films I'm Anticipating In 2015
With 2014 coming to a close, I've already covered the most popular stories of 2014 here on nerdy views. So now let's look ahead and talk about the movies I'm anticipating most in 2015. Chances are good you'll be seeing a lot about these films on nerdy views over the next year.
10. Mad Max: Fury Road
What's it about?: George Miller, the writer and director of the first three Mad Max films continues his franchise with Fury Road. In it, Tom Hardy replaces Mel Gibson as Max, and encounters a woman named Furiosa (Charlize Theron) who wants to cross the desert.
Why I'm excited: I've never seen a single Mad Max film all the way through. And my only real memory of the franchise is Tina Turner's "We Don't Need Another Hero." But this trailer alone has me excited. It has awesome looking vehicles, crazy stunts, and a car exploding in midair in a sandstorm. Plus, Tom Hardy is good in everything.
When it opens: May 15th

Stop Takin' Liam Neeson's Sh*t!!!
Watching this music video advertisement for Taken 3, it becomes really clear why people keep taking Liam Neeson's shit. Because he has the attention span of a gnat and it's easy! It's fun to see Neeson kick ass, but it's even more fun when he pokes fun at himself. Liam Neeson's shit gets taken again on January 9th.

Game of Thrones 2015 Promo
HBO released an end of year video which basically ran through the highlights of 2014 which included True Detective, True Blood, Veep, Boardwalk Empire, and of course Game of Thrones. At the end of the video was a promo for shows coming in 2015, and Game of Thrones got a whopping 5 seconds showing some scenes from the upcoming season! It's hard to get excited about 5 seconds of footage, but any Game of Thrones I can get that's not some blurry three-eyed raven vision is good enough for me. In it you see Cersei walking angrily (when is she NOT angry?!?), Jon Snow turning dramatically, Tyrion in a hoodie, and Arya in what I'm assuming is Braavos. Here's the Game of Thrones portion of the promo.
And here's the full promo from HBO. In addition to Game of Thrones, I'm looking forward to the return of Veep, Silicon Valley, and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.

Marvel vs DC Epic Fan Made Trailer
YouTube user Alex Luthor pulled some video from Marvel and DC movies, TV, and video games and even some fan made superhero videos to put together this mashup trailer of epic proportions. The video starts off with Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill (I'm totally wrong on this. It's Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1. But it sounds so much like Smulders!) narrating about multi-verses, the existence of an infinite number of parallel dimensions. Doctor Doom is tinkering with the Tesseract until it explodes causing their universes to collide and all hell breaks loose. It has Superman squaring off against Thor, Batman and Iron Man pitting their techie, billionaire personas against each other, and Wonder Woman and the Hulk hurtling towards each other among other superhero appearances. The thing I love most is how well this trailer is edited. Reaction shots, fighting shots, it all looks great and actually makes sense. Just goes to show with good vision and some creative editing, an idea can turn into something epic.

Farewell to The Colbert Report
After nine years, Thursday night was the final episode of The Colbert Report as Stephen Colbert will be replacing David Letterman on CBS next year. The wonderful sendoff of an episode began with a segment about Syria, and ended with Colbert riding off into the night sky with Santa Claus, Abraham Lincoln, and Alex Trebek. Yes that sounds absurd, but if you've watched The Colbert Report over the years, you'll know this is par for the course.
But before he signed off, Colbert assured the Nation that this wasn't goodbye, and began singing Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again." He was eventually joined by a cavalcade of guests that stopped by to serenade him off the air, among them Bryan Cranston, Willie Nelson, Tom Brokaw, Jeff Daniels, Big Bird, Keith Olbermann, Katie Couric, Michael Stipe, James Franco, Cookie Monster, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Barry Manilow, Patrick Stewart, George Lucas, and of course good buddy Jon Stewart among dozens of other actors, singers, musicians, journalists, and political figures. It was a touching tribute, and I think even out of character, CBS late night will be in good hands.

2014 nerdy views in Review
2014 went by so quickly! Now that nerdy views is a year and a month old, I wanted to see what stories you guys were interested in the most this year. So here are the top ten stories you looked at and interacted with most on nerdy views in 2014.
10. Indiana Jones Reboot/Recast?!?
Way back in March, a rumor circulated that Bradley Cooper was at the top of the list to replace Harrison Ford in a reboot of the Indiana Jones franchise. And just like a toddler who doesn't get what he wants, the Internet lost its mind. I took a very neutral approach to the rumor, and at this point it was still very much a rumor. Indy's last outing, Kingdom of the Crystal was not well received but it was still a money maker. Although I'm astonished to find out it carries a 78% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. I'm arguably a bigger fan of Star Trek than the Indiana Jones franchise and I didn't mind when that reboot hit theaters, so why should a new Indy incense me any more? Ultimately the rumors were debunked, while the studio still has interest in making a new Indy movie. Meanwhile Bradley Cooper stuck with Disney (they own LucasFilm & Marvel) and starred as the voice of Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy, and Harrison Ford will be seen in next year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
It's the trial of Tyrion Lannister! Accused of poisoning his nephew, King Joffrey, the episode was kind of a mish-mash until the trial began. There was Davos and Stannis trying to get money for an army, the attempted rescue of Theon Greyjoy, and Dany trying to make reparations for her dragon's burnish behavior. But when it came time for the trial, the episode finally got moving. The testimony was damning, even though it was all lies. And then a surprise witness shattered Tyrion's core. When Peter Dinklage took the stand, (he was nominated for an Emmy for this episode) he was electric. He told off the courtroom and demanded a trial by combat. And we all know how well that went for his champion...

The Office: Middle Earth
Martin Freeman, star of The Hobbit trilogy hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend so you knew there had to be a sketch related to that. But who knew the mashup would be with Freeman's first series, The Office in this brilliant parody. Joining Freeman are Bobby Moynihan's Gandalf which trends more towards David Brent, and Taran Killam as Gollum is as spot on as you can get. And kudos for using The Office UK theme! Makes me want to rewatch the series!

Terminator: Genisys Trailer Breakdown
The fact that I'm finally getting to my breakdown of Terminator: Genisys four days after the premiere of the trailer should give you an indication of the enthusiasm level I have for this film. The first two films in the series written and directed by James Cameron are science-fiction masterpieces and that legacy is the only reason I'm giving this reboot a shot. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was pretty much a lazy rehash of Judgment Day, but still worth watching if only to see Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Terminator again. Salvation unfortunately was a complete train wreck. Eschewing the time-travel aspect of the previous films, Salvation took place in the future during the war with the machines. The lack of Schwarzenegger as well as any resemblance to any other movie in the franchise made it the lowest rated of the series as well as the least profitable. Now with Genisys, according to the trailer, the "rules have been reset." They've brought back Arnold, and "rebooted" the franchise making this one an alternate timeline combining elements from the first two films in the series. You know, the good ones...
As if this series could get any more complicated. Try to wrap your brain around my breakdown of this trailer.
The trailer starts in the future with John Connor (Jason Clarke) addressing his men, one of whom is Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney).

Here it is, the first official trailer for Terminator: Genisys. And I can hear the collective nerd population rolling their eyes.

Terminator: Genisys Tease
Yup, it's a tease for the Terminator: Genisys trailer that's coming out tomorrow, and the biggest surprise is that it looks like the T-1000 is in it. My interest level just ticked up a very slight notch.
Update: According to the cast list, Lee Byung-hun is playing the T-1000. You may remember him as Storm Shadow from the G.I.Joe live action movies.

It's a Menage a Sabre!
Last week, The Force Awakens trailer debuted and the Internet collectively lost its freaking mind. There was a black Stormtrooper, the Millenium Falcon soaring majestically through the sky, and a hooded figure with a new badass looking lightsaber. And the Internet lost its mind once again over how impractical such a weapon would be. Memes came out of the woodwork making fun of it, and nerds had something brand new to complain about. Well Stephen Colbert, allegedly the FIRST ever Star Wars fan by two weeks has his explanation complete with a diagram and he sums it up perfectly. Nerds, you've just been owned. Now just enjoy the trailer for god's sake...

Better Call Saul Sneak Peek
Up until now, all the previews of Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spinoff/prequel have been little clips that didn't really tease too much, so I didn't find them worth talking about. But now, AMC has released a one minute scene featuring Saul Goodman and all around badass Mike Ehrmantraut in a clip titled "No Parking." It's a funny confrontation which might indicate the light-hearted tone of the series, especially when you compare it to its big brother. I consider the last season of Breaking Bad to be one of the best in television history, and hopefully Better Call Saul will be worth watching considering the people involved.
Better Call Saul premieres Sunday February 8th, 2015 on AMC.

The Force Awakens: Teaser Breakdown
If you've been a good little Star Wars fan, you've already seen the first teaser trailer for The Force Awakens.
Now let's take a closer look at what nerds will be poring over and over-analyzing until the next trailer comes out. Hey! I'm not judging, I'm one of those nerds!
The Force Awakens First Trailer
Okay folks, I think this is the real deal because there are actual shots of new cast members John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in it. It's the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens! And I sense there will be a great nerd disturbance in the force...

Game of Thrones Season 5 Tease
And just like Arya Stark, the tease is short and to the point. Game of Thrones is at least four months away, but as the tease advertises, you can "Receive the Power of the Sight" by visiting www.ThreeEyedRaven.com to get updates about the show via SMS or Twitter.
Everything happens super fast so here's a breakdown of the scenes that are shown.
TMNT and Real Ghostbusters in CGI
Ready for a blast from the past? YouTube user Zim Animation has updated the opening credits from the 1980's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon using 3D animation. Here's his video along with the original opening credits in an inset for comparison. I think the results are pretty spot on.
It looks like they're gonna give this treatment to a bunch of 80's cartoons because their next update is this snippet from The Real Ghostbusters, and I can't wait for the full video of this one.
Who ya gonna call? Apparently Zim Animation if you want CGI updates of your favorite cartoons!

Jurassic World Trailer Breakdown
It's happening again. Scientists are messing with genetics and movie studios are making sequels they don't need to. And apparently we live in a world where everything leaks early. The official trailer for Jurassic World is already out and here it is!
And now on to the breakdown!
The trailer starts with a couple of parents dropping their kids off at the boat dock.

Batman Infiltrates ACE Chemicals
Batman: Arkham Knight doesn't come out until next June but here's some gameplay showing Batman rescuing hostages from ACE Chemicals. The video also shows the Arkham Knight, and how the Batmobile integrates itself when Batman is fighting. There are 2 more gameplay videos scheduled to be released continuing this mission so I'll keep you up to date when they come out.
Jurassic World Teaser
Yup, we live in a world where there are teaser trailers for trailers, and we're just going to have to deal with it. The full trailer for Jurassic World debuts this Thursday November 27th, but for now, this short tease will have to do. The movie stars Chris Pratt (in his bid to take over all media) and Bryce Dallas Howard. Jurassic World opens in theaters June 12, 2015.
And just because it always makes me laugh, here's a scene from the original Jurassic Park with the theme covered by a melodica.

The Hobbit: The Last Goodbye
What a long journey it's been for the Baggins family. Peter Jackson's final movie about Middle Earth comes out December 17th, and the music video that will play over the credits of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has just been released, and it's a doozy. Titled "The Last Goodbye," it's performed by Billy Boyd who played Pippin in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. The song serves as both the last glimpse of Middle Earth and as a farewell to us, the audience. The video features shots of him singing and playing guitar along with plenty of clips from The Hobbit trilogy as well as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In addition to that, there are behind the scenes shots of the cast and crew having tons of fun on set. It makes me really want to go home and watch the Lord of the Rings again, and makes me excited for the last movie in the series.
Boyd has a beautiful Scottish voice, and you should remember him singing "Edge of Night" for Denethor in Return of the King. The song was used in a previous trailer for The Hobbit and here's the performance from Return of the King in case you forgot.

Game of Thrones: Iron From Ice
Need a Game of Thrones fix? Telltale Games, the studio that developed the extremely well received Walking Dead game, is creating a six episode Game of Thrones video game, called Iron From Ice. Here's a description from the studio:
"This new story tells of House Forrester, a noble family from the north of Westeros, loyal to the Starks of Winterfell. Caught up in the events surrounding the War of the Five Kings, they are thrown into a maelstrom of bloody warfare, revenge, intrigue, and horror as they fight to survive while the seven kingdoms tear themselves apart.
You will take on the role of different members of the Forrester household, and determine their fate through the choices you make; your actions and decisions will change the story around you."
The art style of the game has the similar "painted" look from their Walking Dead game, which I only played one episode of but still enjoyed. In this trailer narrated by Cersei Lannister, you see glimpses of Cersei, Tyrion, Margaery, and Ramsay Snow. According to the description, you don't play as any of these characters, but will run into them as the game's events coincide with season four of the show. The Forresters are characters from the books and not the show, so there's definitely some leeway in what the writers can do.
No word on a release date so you can check out more information on the game from the Telltale Games site, and here's the teaser trailer for Iron From Ice.
Dance Off!!!
I am legitimately excited for the Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-ray which comes out December 9th mainly because I only got to see it once in theaters and I want to see it again. Marvel has been releasing Blu-ray clips this past week and this latest one is probably the funniest one I've seen. It's an outtake of the climactic face-off between the Guardians and Ronan where Star-Lord proposes a dance off. You can pretty much see where this is going.
And just for comedy's sake, the guys at How It Should Have Ended have finally applied their brand of humor to Guardians of the Galaxy with multiple ways it should have ended!

Peanuts Trailer
People in my age group definitely grew up watching Peanuts specials on TV. A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin are still holiday mainstays today. And the Linus and Lucy Theme is one of the most recognizable Christmas songs out there. So the news of a new 3-D computer animated Peanuts movie coming out next Christmas is interesting to say the least. I have to say the animation does look pretty good. It's not too 3-D, and that's a good thing. Kind of reminds me of when South Park animation changed from paper to CGI. Anyway, here's the trailer!
The Peanuts Movie is scheduled for a November 6th, 2015 release.

LEGO Time of the Doctor
A while back, there was a LEGO stop-motion of Day of the Doctor. Now, the ante has been upped with this full on LEGO rendering of the final scene of Doctor Who's Time of the Doctor. It brings back all the feels from Matt Smith's regeneration into Peter Capaldi, and makes me think a LEGO Doctor Who game just has to happen.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailer 1a
Marvel released a second trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is pretty much the same as the first one, with a few new scenes. So it's not really a second trailer. It's more of a 1a. Anyway, here's the trailer!
And here's a breakdown of those new scenes.
New to the opening scene, here's Maria Hill loading her gun along with a reaction shot. As if that gun is going to do anything against Ultron.

Did you miss last night's Simpsons/Futurama crossover? Well, it wasn't exactly epic, but it definitely made me miss Futurama. I'm trying something new so here's what I think were the best moments from "Simpsorama."

The Battle of the Five Armies Trailer Breakdown
It's only a few short weeks before we take our last trip to Middle Earth in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the third and final chapter in The Hobbit series of movies. And now here's the final trailer.
And how about a closer look?

Star Wars Episode VII finally has a name, and it's The Force Awakens. Definitely a name evoking the new beginnings of this franchise. Maybe they'll have a little fun with it and have a cat jump on Luke in bed to open the movie. According to their tweet, the film has also completed principal photography. You know between Star Wars and Marvel, it seems like Disney is just printing money.

Ghostbusters Reunion
Credit ew.com |
The folks over at Entertainment Weekly scored majorly for their "Reunions" issue by corralling Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Ivan Reitman together for a photo shoot of biblical proportions. And superfan Al Roker from the Today Show got to do the coveted interview. In the clip they reminisce about adlibbing, what slime was made of, the authority of Ecto-1, and their thoughts on the proposed all female Ghostbusters reboot. It's great seeing them all together again!
Marvel 75 Years
Last night's Marvel special titled Marvel: 75 Years From Pulp to Pop! didn't offer any new information regarding any upcoming Marvel projects. It was mainly a history lesson detailing Marvel's beginnings as a small time comic book company all the way to today's media powerhouse. You can find the majority of this information online on the Marvel Comics Wikipedia page, but it was presented in a very entertaining way with the likes of Kevin Smith & Seth Green offering commentary along with Stan Lee and other writers at Marvel.
We DID get a first look at some blink-or-you'll-miss-it shots from Ant-Man.
Here's Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man

Setting the Stage for Civil War
I gotta say the security at this week's Marvel event must have been pretty crappy because ANOTHER video leaked online. But of course when Hydra is your security company, you have to expect these things. Anyway, this clip shows a tense scene between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers which mirrors and amplifies the animosity the two had for each other in the first Avengers. Take a look.
Get To the 18th Century Chopper!!!
In the oddest bit of marketing, an Assassin's Creed Unity gameplay trailer was released today showcasing the four-player co-op aspect of the game. The weird thing is it's being played by people doing celebrity impersonations of David Attenborough (narrator of a nature show on BBC), Alan Carr (an English comedian), Morgan Freeman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The clip is from Assassin's Creed UK so I can understand the involvement of the English people, and Arnold impersonations always sound funny, but Morgan Freeman is the one I don't understand. He doesn't even really sound like him. But the clip is worth watching just to hear the Arnold voice spewing typical Arnold phrases but in 18th century France.
Infinity War Teaser
In case you're not completely burned out on all the Marvel news that's come out the past few days, the teaser for Avengers: Infinity War just leaked online. The majority of it is footage from previous Marvel movies showing the Tesseract, the Aether, Loki's Sceptre, and the Orb, with narration from Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Anthony Hopkins' Odin among others. The money shot is at the end when we see Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. It's shaky cam footage so you hear every cheer in the audience. But the biggest cheer was for the fact the movie will be split into two parts. Can you get that excited about a movie that comes out in four years? Apparently you can... :P

If We Burn, You Burn With Us!!!
Katniss Everdeen tells off President Snow and everything kind of goes to hell in the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. There's definitely way more stuff shown in this trailer and I'm completely confused by it all since I haven't seen Catching Fire yet. Incidentally, it's finally on Netflix now so I should probably get to it soon. Anyway, here's the trailer!
Mockingjay Part 1 opens November 21st.
Halo 2 Anniversary Trailer
With Halo: The Master Chief Collection coming out on November 11th, Microsoft has debuted a brand spanking new trailer showcasing the newly redone cutscenes in Halo 2. It was revolutionary 10 years ago with its online multiplayer and dual wielding weapons. And with this update, it looks absolutely beautiful.
Of course we've been spoiled by great graphics for a while so to get a good scope of what Blur Studios has done (the company that updated the cutscenes) here's a video compiled by Halo Canon, with a comparison of old vs. new graphics. Outstanding work Blur!
The Halo: Master Chief Collection will be available November 11th on Xbox One.
Age of Ultron Bonus Footage
If yesterday's Marvel news wasn't enough for you, a new scene from the movie also debuted last night during Agents of SHIELD. The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was supposed to premiere during the episode but thanks to Hydra, it got leaked to the Internet a week early. In an act of goodwill, Marvel released the trailer themselves, and then last night included some new footage along with the trailer. The scene is an example of why I think the Marvel movies tend to be more fun than DC. It involves various members of the Avengers trying to lift Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. They're all hanging out and joking around until Ultron crashes the party.

The Marvel Roadmap
Credit: Kyle Buchanan |
Avengers: Age of Ultron, May 1, 2015. We obviously already knew about this and you can check out the trailer and my trailer breakdown here.
Ant-Man, July 17, 2015. The Paul Rudd led film has hit some obstacles with director Edgar Wright leaving the film, but it's important because it completes Marvel's Phase 2.
Captain America: Civil War, May 6, 2016. Cap 3 has been referred to as Avengers 2.5 and will feature the Civil War storyline which required superhumans to register themselves with the government, with Iron Man leading the pro-registration faction, and Captain America being against it.
AMBITION
So that's what Aidan Gillen's been doing in his time off from Game of Thrones.
The short is a little hard to explain so here's a synopsis from the site:
"The short film tells the story of one of the most important space exploration endeavours of this decade. Just as Gillen’s enigmatic Master encourages Franciosi’s Apprentice to seek out the key to life amidst a rugged alien landscape, ESA has been on a decade-long ambitious journey of its own, to unlock the mysteries of a comet and the origins of our Solar System with its Rosetta spacecraft, hundreds of millions of kilometres from Earth."
It's a very interesting and beautiful looking short aimed to help support the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission, deployed 10 years ago and is the first spacecraft to successfully orbit a comet. Very fascinating stuff if you're into space. Check it out!
The Flash: Things You Can't Outrun
In "Things You Can't Outrun," the villain of the week took a backseat to explore the backgrounds of the support team or "geek squad" if you will by showing a lot of flashbacks to the fateful night the particle accelerator exploded.
Here are four things to take away from Things You Can't Outrun.
The Mist
Kyle Nimbus, dubbed the Mist by Cisco can turn himself into poisonous gas because the night of the explosion, he was being executed via gas chamber. Not exactly the best development for the character in this episode, and he was actually dispatched very easily. The Flash kind of just tired him out. But he is the first super-villain to survive and be incarcerated at STAR Labs new makeshift prison. As more meta-human villains get locked up, it'll be more and more likely that they'll all get broken out at some point and it'll be utter chaos in Central City.
Confusing fact: Anthony Carrigan, the actor who portrays the Mist, will also be playing Victor Zsasz in upcoming episodes of Gotham.
