Game of Thrones: First of His Name

Since I'm still in a Star Wars mood, I decided to compare Game of Thrones and Star Wars characters from the latest episode, First of His Name. While they have wildly different audiences, there are very similar themes. Admittedly, some of these are a stretch, but I had an idea and I ran with it. ;)

Note: I haven't read the books so any commentary I make is completely based on the show.

Sober Cersei

Cersei has spent so much time on the dark side, it's a little weird seeing her acting nicely towards anybody. And she did just that to Margaery. I thought she was going over to give her a piece of her mind, but instead she extended an olive branch, recognizing that Joffrey did horrible things, and acknowledging that Tommen would need more help than she could give.

And later on, she and Tywin planned out the next royal wedding, and then her wedding to Loras. What's up with all the good behavior? Is Cersei really that broken, has she stopped drinking, or is she playing a long con? She is a Lannister after all. So my guess is she's pulling a slave Leia. While she's being kept down right now, I bet she's just biding her time until she can wrap that chain around someone's neck and strangle them. And she's obviously gunning for Tyrion.

Oh yeah, and the Lannisters are broke because they owe a ton of gold to Jabba, I mean the Iron Bank of Braavos. This makes their alliance with the Tyrells all the more important.

Queens Rule!!!

Dany is ruling the way Queen Amidala probably would. Faced with her first setback, she could have sailed for a sneak attack on King's Landing with 93 new ships and an army of 10,000. Instead she decided to do the right thing and go back to the two cities she helped liberate since they had fallen back to their masters. It's a little frustrating since she had made all this progress, but at least Dany understands that she can't rule the Seven Kingdoms if she can't even rule Slaver's Bay. But it does say something if Dany is starting to question her own leadership abilities.

And That's How I Met... Your Crazy Aunt Lysa

Wow, Sansa just cannot catch break. One moment it's all lemon cakes and gossipy stories about your mom. The next it's an inquisition on what your sexual history was with Littlefinger. Yup, your Aunt Lysa is not crazy in love, she's flat out crazy. And how can you really take a woman seriously who breastfeeds her grown son?!?

But the biggest reveal here is Littlefinger's involvement in the death of Jon Arryn. He's basically been the Emperor all along manipulating everyone to his advantage. It was his plan to have Lysa poison her husband and then blame it on the Lannisters. This led to Ned Stark becoming the Hand of the King, and the giant crap storm that followed for the Starks.

Varys once said that Petyr Baelish was the most dangerous man in Westeros. I'm more and more inclined to believe him. It's been slow but Littlefinger's machinations won him Harrenhal and the Vale. His eyes are most certainly on the Iron Throne. You can imagine the Emperor sitting on the Iron Throne right?

Arya's Path to the Dark Side

Arya could easily have slit the Hound's throat in his sleep, but she didn't. When you're raised by Ned Stark, it comes with a sense of honor. But that same honor got Ned's head chopped off, and it just got Arya smacked in the face. The Hound just taught her a hard lesson; dancing won't win you any fights. But armor and dirty fighting will. Give in to your anger! Take your weapon! Strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete! The question is, will she give in like Anakin? Or will she recognize the darkness and not submit like Luke?

The Oddest Couple in Westeros

Brienne knows how to get stuff done. She delivers prisoners like R2-D2 delivers messages. She's brave, knows what to do, and does it well. Pod on the other hand isn't cut out for life on the road. He can't ride a horse very well and he doesn't know how to cook. Without any wine to pour, he really is as useless as C-3PO with nothing to translate. So their adventures together to find Sansa are going to be either pretty hilarious or pretty dangerous until Pod can prove himself. I have a bad feeling about this. But he did after all save Tyrion's life by killing a member of the Kingsguard.

Jon Snow's a Scruffy Looking Nerf Herder

Is it wrong to compare Jon Snow and his Crows' assault on Craster's Keep to Han Solo and the Ewoks taking out the shield generator on Endor? Aside from stabbing Karl right through the head, they're almost exactly the same. ;) I mean Jon Snow even reunites with his furry friend by the end!

So this whole mess at Craster's Keep is resolved and Bran's back on his way to the north thanks to warging into Hodor and taking care of Locke. Bran's power is growing. It's inevitable that he'll be able to control bigger animals. You know, like dragons.

In next week's preview, Yara Greyjoy goes looking for her brother, Tyrion goes on trial, and Mark Gatiss from Sherlock is a guest star!

Bonus Content!

Tony Swatton is apparently one of the 3 men who know how to forge Valyrian steel because he just made a great replica of Jon Snow's sword, Longclaw. The work that goes into making this sword is pretty amazing. Check it out!
